Interview with Staedtler legal counsel

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

The Managing Intellectual Property website has a lengthy interview with Staedtler’s chief legal counsel.
Naturally, a lot of attention is given to Staedtler’s brands and trademarks.
Though Mars dates from 1900, Staedtler has two older brands: Atlas and Minerva. I wasn’t previously aware of Atlas.
A very interesting read.

Staedtler Dry Highlighter 146 pencil

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

In March, we looked at the Lyra Mega Liner highlighting pencil. The offerings in this category are few, but there is at least one alternative.
I just discovered that Staedtler Austria also manufacture highlighting pencils. The ones I found are packaged in a “blister pack” and are sold as “Bible Highlighters”.

The pencils are round, and […]

A tale of two Pacifics

Monday, June 16th, 2008

The Staedtler Pacific is a very distinctive looking pencil, round in shape with a gold finish, a gold with blue band ferrule, and white eraser.
The pencil is marked:
Steadtler Pacific Germany 132 80 HB

Despite the great looks, it is unfortunately a scratchy office-grade pencil.
Now wait a minute. In 2007, we looked at another “Staedtler Pacific” […]

The Three Camels

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

The camel is renowned as a hardy animal, able to persevere through challenging circumstances.
The pencil world seems to adore the camel, as there are a significant number of camel brands.
First, the Staedtler Camel. This brand has been aound for many years, and now appears to be made in Germany for export markets.
Second, an entire company […]

Staedtler’s twelve pencils

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Staedtler is one of the two leading global pencil manufacturers. I thought it would be interesting to look further at just what their pencil offerings are.
I took a look at the twenty-two national sites referenced by staedtler.com.
Globally, Staedtler offers twelve pencils in four lines. Most European countries get the full range, and the […]

Staedtler Mars Lumograph EE update

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

With thanks to Staedtler staff in Canada, Germany, and Thailand, there is further news on the EE grade pencil.
After the EB and EE grades were withdrawn, Staedtler Malaysia continued making those versions for their market, with graphite cores supplied from Germany. This production ended in 2005.

At present, some of the 8B pencils made in Germany […]

Staedtler 925 95 drafting pencils

Friday, February 29th, 2008

While I didn’t mind the Pentel 120, the Mars micro was not to my taste. Drafting tools are supposed to be Staedtler’s turf, so I thought I would try something else from them. A little bit of research indicated that the 925 95 series is highly regarded, though sometimes tricky to find.
The inner workings of […]

Steno pencils: pencils with a job

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Faber-Castell and Staedtler each make a specialty extension to their premier lines - a “steno pencil”, aimed at shorthand practitioners. They are round versions of the Castell 9000 and Lumograph 100.
Staedtler’s entry is the Mars Stenofix, model 101. A round version of the Lumograph 100 (a Lumograph 101?), it is dark blue, but […]
